Balanced Scoring Leads To Men's Basketball Victory

The Wells College men's basketball team went on the road and won 84-79 at Penn State-Abington on Saturday, Jan. 21. Five players scored in double figures for the Express. Wells is 10-4 overall and 7-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Penn State-Abington is 5-9 and 4-5 in the NEAC.

Wells built a double-digit lead in the first half and didn't trail for the remainder of the game. The team's 10-4 record through 14 games is tied for the best start in program history. A win tomorrow in a 2 p.m. game at Bryn Athyn College will give Wells its best overall start.

Rich Ross led Wells with 21 points and made seven of 10 field-goal attempts. Chris Courtney scored 16 and Vaughndell Brantley added 13. Ross had eight rebounds and three blocked shots for the Express.

Career-high scoring performances from freshman guards Anthony Nesci (14) and Zach D'Arpino (11) boosted the balanced scoring for Wells.

In the first half, Ross had 13 points, Nesci scored 10 and Brantley had 10 as the Express ran out to a 45-32 lead at the break. Wells used a 24-13 run to build a 10-point lead with six minutes left in the half.

Abington reduced the lead to just three points in the final minute, but Courtney, D'Arpino, and Nesci all made 2-of-2 from the line to close out the victory.

Wells shot 48.9 percent from the floor and assisted on 13 of its 23 baskets. The Express made 28-of-35 attempts at the free-throw line.
