Ross Sets Career Scoring Mark, Passes 1000 Points in Win

Wells College men's basketball sophomore Rich Ross achieved a significant career milestone and helped lead the Express to an 81-72 comeback win over College of Saint Elizabeth on Friday, Feb. 17 at the Schwartz Athletic Center. Ross scored the 1,000th point of his Wells College career and finished the contest with 34 points in the game.

Ross is the second player in Wells men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point mark. Over 49 career games, Ross has 1,015 points, which is a 20.7 points-per-game average. In addition to reaching the 1,000-point milestone, Ross became the program's all-time scoring leader in Friday's victory. Darrell Bullock was the only other Wells player to score 1,000 points in a career, and held the program's scoring record with 1,010 points, which Ross surpassed.

Wells rallied from a seven-point deficit with 14 minutes remaining in the game and went on to a nine-point win. There were a pair of significant runs in the second half. Saint Elizabeth surged in the early part of the half. The Eagles trailed by five points, then went on a 14-2 run to build a 55-48 lead with 14:11 left.

The Express answered with eight points in a row to go up 56-55.

The decisive run of the game was a 15-4 spree from Wells that gave the Express a 75-66 lead with two minutes left and Wells closed out the victory.

Ross had 34 points, his seventh game of the year with 30 points or more. Anthony Nesci scored 17 points. Nesci added six assists. Ross led Wells with nine rebounds. Wells was 17-for-21 from the free-throw line.

Wells concludes its regular season Saturday at 3 p.m. against Penn College. The Express has clinched a playoff berth in the North Eastern Athletic Conference playoffs and will play on Tuesday against Morrisville State College at a location to be determined.
