Dr. Michael Bowser Hired As Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach
AURORA, N.Y. – Dr. Michael Bowser has been hired as the Assistant Coach of the men's basketball team at Wells College, Head Coach Joe Wojtylko announced Tuesday afternoon. Dr. Bowser comes to Aurora after serving as the long-time Head Coach of the men's basketball at North Eastern Athletic Conference-rival Cazenovia College in Cazenovia, N.Y.
"Bringing in a coach of Dr. Bowser's caliber to work with our student-athletes is great news for our program," explained Wojtylko, who enters his sixth year as bench boss of the Express in 2013. "Dr. Bowser has coached within our conference for many, many years and brings with him a large amount of knowledge about not only our opponents, but also the game itself. I look forward to working with him this fall."
Dr. Bowser was hired as the men's basketball coach at Cazenovia in 2005, replacing long time Head Coach Todd Widrick with whom he served as an assistant for dating back to 2002 before taking the program's reins. Across a nine-year tenure with the Wildcats, Bowser racked up 69 coaching victories and was selected as the NEAC's top coach in 2007-08, earning Coach of the Year merits while his team claimed the 2007-08 NEAC Co-Championship.
Prior to joining the Wildcats, Dr. Bowser served as the Junior Varsity Head Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach at Fabius (N.Y.)-Pompey High School. He also coached middle school basketball at Liverpool (N.Y.) High School. Dr. Bowser practiced as a successful cardiologist in upstate New York for many years, retiring at the age of 55 to pursue a lifelong dream of coaching basketball.
A Buffalo, N.Y. native, Dr. Bowser was a 1966 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and went on to receive a degree in internal medicine and cardiology from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y.
The men's basketball program at Wells has experienced large-scale success since becoming a varsity sport in 2008. With 79 career victories in only five seasons, the Express have appeared in the championship game of the NEAC postseason in all but one year, most recently falling to Morrisville State College in the 2012-13 title game. The Mustangs eventually fell in the NCAA Division III playoffs after reaching the "Sweet 16".
