Women's Lacrosse Wins; Clinches NEAC Playoff Spot

The Wells College women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Lancaster Bible College 17-14 on Saturday, April 21 at the Wells Turf Field in Aurora, N.Y. The victory improved Wells' conference record to 4-3 on the year and the Express has secured a spot in the upcoming North Eastern Athletic Conference playoffs. It is the first time that Wells has qualified for the playoffs since the 2011 season.

Wells is 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the NEAC. Lancaster Bible is 3-11 overall and 2-5 in the NEAC.

Lancaster Bible held the lead for most of the opening half. Wells tied the score at 6-6 with four minutes remaining in the first half on a goal by Madison Beriman. Mackenzie Maloney scored with 1:45 left in the half to give Wells its first lead at 7-6.

The Express scored four straight goals to start the second half. Maloney scored the first of those four, then assisted on the next three. Julia Smith scored one and Renee Bartosz had the other two. Wells led 11-6.

Lancaster Bible went on a 6-1 run to tie the score 12-12. Maloney assisted on a goal by Savanah Connors to give Wells a 13-12 lead. After LBC tied it again, Maloney scored twice in a row, just 19 seconds apart, to put Wells in front 15-13. Goals in the final four minutes from Maloney and Connors clinched the victory for the Express.

The Chargers held a 23-7 advantage in draw controls, but Wells made the most of its opportunities on offense. The Express scored 17 goals on 30 shots.

Maloney had eight goals and five assists for 13 points. Bartosz had four goals. Connors had three goals and an assist.

Anna Bozeat made 10 saves for the Express, and added five ground balls.

Prior to the game, Wells honored senior defender Quinn Doubet, a four-year starter at goalkeeper and on defense. Doubet had six ground balls and two caused turnovers in the victory.

Wells wraps up regular-season action with games Friday, April 27 at Medaille College and Saturday, April 28 at Hilbert College.
