Maloney Sets Career Goals Mark In Women's Lacrosse Win
The Wells College women's lacrosse team had its highest scoring total of the season and largest margin of victory and Mackenzie Maloney became the program's all-time leading goal-scorer as the Express rolled to a 20-2 victory over Elmira College on Tuesday, April 2 at the Wells Turf Field.
Maloney scored eight goals in the game to increase her career total to 194 goals. That passed the previous-best career record of 193 goals established by Sara Cooke. Maloney already held the program records for career points and career assists. The Wells women's lacrosse program has competed at the varsity level since 1980.
Wells scored the first 10 goals of the game and the Express led 12-2 at halftime. Maloney had six goals and two assists in the first half of the game. Savanah Connors scored three goals and added an assist in the first half, Renee Bartosz had two goals, and Miranda Mingen also scored before halftime.
In the second half, Wells outscored Elmira 8-0. Alexius Stanton and Amanda Fastiggi each scored their first goals of the season. Maloney's record-tying and record-setting goals were the last two goals of the game for the Express and came in the final seven minutes of the half. Julia Smith had two second-half assists.
In addition to her eight-goal, three-assist performance, Maloney added five caused turnovers, seven ground balls, and nine draw controls.
Anna Bozeat made two saves as the starting goalkeeper and Delaney Kendrick made her collegiate debut. She had one save and one ground ball over the final 17 minutes of the game.
The Express had a 14-9 advantage in draw controls and committed just five turnovers compared to 17 turnovers by Elmira. Wells outshot the Soaring Eagles 34-10.
Wells moved over the .500 mark with a 3-2 overall record. Elmira is 1-10 on the year. It was the highest-scoring game for the Express since a 22-11 win at Penn State Abington to open the 2018 season.
Wells is back in action Saturday, April 6 at 3:30 p.m. against Keuka College.
