Women’s Lacrosse Edged By St. Elizabeth, 6-5

AURORA, N.Y. – The Express were a combined 2-for-10 on free position shots as the Wells College women's lacrosse team fell to the Soaring Eagles of St. Elizabeth by a 6-5 margin Sunday afternoon at the South Athletic Field. The Soaring Eagles won their first-ever game against the Express while also earning their first North Eastern Athletic Conference (5-4, 1-3 NEAC) win. The Express, who previously had won three straight games, drop to 4-4 overall and to 2-1 within league play.

Playing under a running clock due to deteriorating field conditions, the Express found themselves playing from behind for the majority of the contest. Despite senior Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif.) forcing home a feed from classmate Erika Bareiss (Clinton, N.Y.) with only 2:17 expired, St. Elizabeth scored the next three goals of the game to capture a 3-1 lead at the half.

Wells charged ahead, taking a 4-3 lead with 16:07 remaining in the second half after goals from sophomore Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.), freshman Bri'Anna Horne (Baltimore, Md.) and Bass. The Soaring Eagles took control of the game, as Meghan Murray scored her team's next three goals to catapult the visitors to a 6-5 lead with 2:19 remaining in regulation time. St. Elizabeth was able to further drain the clock to stun the Express, who had outscored the Soaring Eagles by a 54-to-12 margin in three prior victories.

Express goalkeeper Chelsea Dann (Flagstaff, Ariz.) made 10 saves on 16 total shots on goal in the loss. Her counterpart, Barbara Beresova, earned the victory after turning aside 10-of-15 shots on net that she faced.

The Express return to action Monday, Apr. 15 as they host the Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Abington in a 3:00 p.m. tilt.
