Women's Lacrosse Drops NEAC Opener At Morrisville State

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Despite a goal from junior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.), the Wells College women's lacrosse team posted a 20-1 loss to the Mustangs of Morrisville State College on Saturday. With the loss, Wells (0-4, 0-1 NEAC) remains winless overall on the season after posting their first defeat within North Eastern Athletic Conference play this afternoon. Morrisville State (4-3, 1-0 NEAC) secured the victory after holding their opponent to one or fewer goals for the first time since Mar. 14, 2010.

Fargnoli's goal came with 12:28 left in the second half, placing Wells on the board. Assisted by sophomore Alaina Kelahan (New Woodstock, N.Y.), the goal was Fargnoli's second of the season. Fargnoli and sophomore Bri'Anna Horne (Baltimore, Md.) each scooped up four ground balls for the Express, leading the team in that category. Additionally, Fargnoli hauled in five draw controls to rank first amongst Wells players on the afternoon.

The host Mustangs opened up a 17-0 lead in the game, staking themselves to a 15 goal advantage entering halftime. Fargnoli's second half goal cut the deficit to 17-1, but the host Mustangs were relentless offensively and went on to rack up three more goals to conclude the day. Cumulatively, Morrisville State outshot the Express by a 39-to-6 margin and beat Wells in the ground game, scooping up 34 ground balls to Wells' 17.

Eight different goal scorers found the back of the net for Morrisville State, including six from Ally Zlinsky to lead all players. Shelby Wood tallied four of her own while Hunter Waldau registered three strikes on the afternoon.  Cassie Edmonson picked up nine loose balls for the Mustangs, leading both teams, while Wood's five caused turnovers also ranked first.

Freshman goaltender Brooke Spanbauer (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) allowed 15 goals on 21 total shots, drawing the loss before yielding to fellow backstop Chelsea Dann (Flagstaff, Ariz.) to begin the second half. Dann made three saves in the second half, allowing five goals down the stretch.

Cailin Dunphy blanked the Express through the first 35:31, turning aside all two shots on net that she faced for the Mustangs. Meagan Mack allowed one goal on the only shot she saw from the Express.

The Express return to action Sunday, Apr. 6 as they host the Wildcats of Cazenovia College in a 4:00 p.m. contest at the South Athletic Field in Aurora.
