Late First-Half Surge Boosts Women's Lacrosse Win

The Wells College women's lacrosse team is back in the win column and back over .500 following a 20-12 win over D'Youville College on Sunday, April 7 at the Wells Turf Field. Six different players scored for the Express and Wells closed the first half with seven straight goals to take control.

The game started evenly as the teams traded scores over the first eight minutes of play. A goal by Savanah Connors with 21:52 remaining in the first half tied the score 2-2 and Mackenzie Maloney followed with a Wells goal 29 seconds later to give the Express its first lead of the game. Wells held the lead the rest of the way.

D'Youville scored midway through the first half to pull within 5-4, but it was the closest the Spartans came to tying the score. Wells scored seven goals in a row going into halftime and led 12-4 at the break. Five Wells players scored in the seven-goal run.

Each team scored eight times in the second half and Wells held a margin of six or more goals throughout the final 30 minutes. Mackenzie Maloney had eight goals and four assists. She surpassed 200 career goals on the day and now has 204 goals in her career. Savanah Connors had five goals and one assist, and Renee Bartosz had three goals and three assists. Julia Smith scored twice, and Miranda Mingen and Alexius Stanton had one goal each.

Wells goalkeeper Anna Bozeat made 14 saves. Wells held a 15-14 advantage in ground balls and 21-12 advantage in draw controls. Connors led Wells with eight draw controls and Smith had a team-high three ground balls.

Wells players, coaches, and fans participated in the Lax-4-Life national campaign to raise suicide prevention awareness.

The Express improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. D'Youville is 3-8 overall and 0-3 in the NEAC. Wells is back in action Saturday, April 13 at Morrisville State at noon.
