Women’s Lacrosse Knocks Off Hilbert, 16-8

AURORA, N.Y. – Sparked by a seven point performance by senior Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif.), the Wells College women's lacrosse team posted a 16-8 victory over the Hawks of Hilbert College Tuesday afternoon at the South Athletic Field. With the victory, Wells improves to 2-3 overall on the year following the non-conference contest. The Hawks fall to 1-4 overall on the season.

Bass recorded seven points off of five goals and two assists (5-2=7) and also tied for the team lead with seven draw controls. Her six ground balls also tied her for the team lead with sophomore Savannah Tucker (Rochester, N.Y.), who scored three goals and an assist for four points (3-1=4). Sophomore Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) recorded her first multiple-point game of the season, forcing home four goals to also set a career-high mark in that category.

Freshmen Lexie Roberson (Winston-Salem, N.C.), Amber Jordan (Auburn, N.Y.) and Bri'Anna Horne (Baltimore, Md.) each scored their first collegiate goals in the game, while junior Brittany Carpenter (Carthage, N.Y.) was able to secure her first collegiate point, an assist.

Despite trailing by a 1-0 margin following Sarah Lorusso's 10th goal of the season, the Express rattled off the game's next eight strikes to take a commanding 8-1 lead with 14:07 remaining in the first half. Hilbert was able to score three of the game's next four goals before a 4-0 run prior to the end of the half silenced any further comeback attempts. Lorusso scored four of her team's eight goals while leading the team with three draw controls.

For Wells, junior Chelsea Dann (Flagstaff, Ariz.) improves to 2-3 overall after making five saves in the 60 minute effort. Meghan Stewart allowed 16 goals on 22 shots, drawing the loss for Hilbert.

Wells secured 18 of the game's 26 draw controls and also posted the 27-to-24 ground ball advantage. Wells was also successful on 15-of-17 clear attempts.

NOTES: Both Hilbert and Wells honored the victims of the Seton Hill University women's lacrosse team tragedy with a moment of silence prior to the starting lineups. Both teams wore red and yellow ribbons and shoelaces in honor of those lost on Mar. 16, 2013 in a bus accident in Southern Pennsylvania on the way to a road contest.
