Women's Lacrosse Topped By Cazenovia, 14-4

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Cazenovia College by a 14-4 margin on Wednesday. Wells falls to 2-10 overall on the season, dipping to 1-5 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Cazenovia (7-4, 5-0 NEAC) remains undefeated in five conference tilts.

Freshman Mackenzie Maloney (Huntington Station, N.Y.) potted two goals for Wells while classmate Julia Smith (Guilderland, N.Y.) added one of her own. Seniors Lexie Roberson (Lewisville, N.C.) and Amber Jordan (Auburn, N.Y.) rounded out the point scoring with a goal and an assist, respectively.

Cazenovia opened up the game with a 7-0 scoring run that Wells could not recover from. With under 10 minutes to go in the opening half, however, the Express scored three of the four goals down the stretch, punctuated by a Smith tally off a Jordan assist with only one second left on the scoreboard.

Maloney scored the first goal of the second half, shrinking the Cazenovia lead to 8-4, but six-straight goals by the Wildcats from that point forward set up the 14-4 final score. The Wildcats outshot the Express by a 34-to-22 margin and held the ground ball advantage, 24-to-12. Cazenovia failed on only five clears while Wells transitioned at a 9-for-21 clip.

Wells backstop Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) stymied the Cazenovia offense in the second half, making 12 of her 15 saves in the final 30 minutes alone. Abigail Kortz halted eight shots for the Wildcats, earning the goalkeeping victory for her team.

The Express will play three-straight road contests to conclude the regular season, taking on the Nittany Lions from Penn St.-Abington this Saturday, Apr. 23 at 12:30 p.m. Wells will take on Bryn Athyn on Saturday, Apr. 24 before traveling to Keuka for a 3 p.m. tilt on Saturday, Apr. 30.
