Women's Lacrosse Wins Opener On Record-Setting Night

The Wells College women's lacrosse team got off to a winning start for the 2019 season as the Express went on the road and came away with an 18-9 win at Houghton College on Tuesday, March 12.

Three upperclass players combined for 14 goals and 12 assists to pace the Express and Mackenzie Maloney continued to make her mark on the Wells College record boards with another high-scoring performance. Maloney had four goals and eight assists, Renee Bartosz had four goals and four assists, and Savanah Connors had six goals.

Mackenzie Maloney entered the game tied for the career points lead for Wells women's lacrosse with Sara Cooke at 212 career points. Maloney became the all-time leader on the first Wells goal of the game, an assist on a Madi Walikis goal. Maloney went on to total four goals and eight assists in the game. Her eight assists is a single-game record for the Express women's lacrosse program. With a program-best 224 career points on 168 goals and 56 assists, Maloney ranks second in career goals (Sara Cooke, 193) and second in career assists (Emily Lotkowictz, 60).

The women's lacrosse program has competed at the varsity level since 1980.

Houghton started strongly and held a 3-1 lead after the first 14 minutes of the first half. Wells answered by scoring five in a row, and six of the final seven goals of the first half. Connors, Maloney, and Bartosz each scored twice in the six-goal spurt and Maloney and Miranda Mingen had two assists each in the half. Wells led 7-4 at halftime.

Houghton pulled within two goals at 9-7 before Wells went on another scoring run in the second half. The Express scored six straight goals and nine out of the next 10 to secure the victory. Connors had four goals and Mingen had two in the closing stretch. Mingen finished with two goals, two assists, and 10 draw controls.

Anna Bozeat was the starting goalkeeper and made 10 saves for Wells to earn the victory. Chloe Marcus and Madi Walikis had goals. Mackenzie Powers had an assist. Connors led Wells with nine ground balls, Maloney had eight, and Julia Smith had seven. Maloney had five caused turnovers and Connors had four.

The Express is 1-0 on the season and Houghton is 0-3. Wells will travel to Delaware and take on Wesley College on Sunday, March 17 at 11 a.m.
