Women's Lacrosse Drops 14-10 Thriller At Morrisville State
MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Wells College women's lacrosse team battled back from a four-goal deficit but ultimately posted a 14-10 loss to the Mustangs from Morrisville State College on Wednesday. With the loss, Wells falls to 2-6 overall and to 2-3 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Morrisville State, the runners-up in last year's conference championship game, remains undefeated in conference play with a 6-0 record while evening their overall record at 6-6.
With five goals against the Mustangs, senior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) passed Tracy Stevenson '84 to assume 10th place on the all-time Wells College career point scoring leaderboard. She concluded the afternoon with 95 career points via 77 goals and 18 assists – including stats only since Wells joined the NCAA in 1986, Fargnoli is eighth on the modern-era point scoring list.
Juniors Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) and Lexie Roberson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) each scored two goals for Wells with sophomore Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.) rounding out the scoring efforts. Gould and Stokes each added one assist apiece in the contest.
Wells and Morrisville State battled to a 3-3 deadlock with only 9:37 left in the first half as Fargnoli's second goal of the game brought the visitors even. The Mustangs, however, scored four-straight goals to assume a 7-3 lead with only 3:10 expired into the second half.
The Express quickly responded, however, with four-straight goals of their own as a man-up strike from Fargnoli dramatically tied the score at seven with 21:17 remaining in regulation time.
The Mustangs took control of the game following Fargnoli's game-tying strike as the hosts scored an impressive six-straight goals in the span of just over seven minutes to keep the Express at bay. Wells scored three of the game's final four goals, but the quick outburst from Morrisville State kept the Express at arm's length.
Morrisville State limited Wells to only four successful clears in the first half while holding distinct advantages in ground balls (26-to-16), shots taken (32-to-25) and turnovers (19-to-25). The Express fired off 17 shots in the final half alone, but nine of Morrisville State's 14 second half shots found their way into the back of the net.
Wells goalkeeper Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) made 10 saves for Wells, drawing the loss. Kallie George made 12 saves on 22 shots for the Mustangs, picking up the victory after making seven key stops against Wells in the final 30 minutes.
The Express return to action Saturday, Apr. 18 as they host the Mavericks of Medaille College at 1 p.m. at the South Athletic Field. Wells will be dedicating the game to raising funds and awareness toward the fight against Ewing's Sarcoma and Team Molly - for more information, click here.
