Long Era Under Way as Women’s Lacrosse Team Begins Season

The Wells College women's lacrosse team took to the field for its first contest of the 2021 season under the direction of new head coach Alyssa Long. Traveling to Alfred University on Thursday, March 18, the Express went toe-to-toe in the second half with the Saxons with each team scoring three goals.

With the bulk of the Wells players seeing their first collegiate action, it may have taken a half to get settled and that may have been the difference in the contest with Alfred taking a 7-2 lead at the break as the team's finished the contest at 10-5. Between shots, groundballs and caused turnovers, a dozen Express players found the scoresheet.

Mackenzie Powers (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Clara Lima (Hastings Hudson, N.Y.) each scored a pair of goals to lead the Express. For Powers, both goals cam from free position shots. Magdalen Garrity (Hudson, N.Y.) had the other Express goal as she also scored on a free position shot just 30 seconds into the game.

Wells had 22 shots overall with 15 finding the net. Of those 15, Powers registered a half-dozen with four coming from free position. Lima finished with three shots and both Garrity and Kayla Rowell (Cicero, N.Y.) each registered a pair. Single shots were credited to Isabella Ciancio (Clinton, N.Y.) and Lydia Thomas (Colton, N.Y).

The Express went 3-for-8 on free position shots and held the opposition to 0-for-8. Wells held the edge in draw controls by a 9-7 margin and scooped 19 groundballs on the day. Goalkeeper Lauren Spiegel (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) finished as the team's top groundball getter with five while also adding six saves in the net.

Mollie Walts (Cortland, N.Y.) led all defenders with four groundballs, and a pair each came from Lima, Powers, Danielle Radivoy (Otisville, N.Y.) and Ellie Beavers (Syracuse, N.Y.). Single groundballs came from Janelle Smalls (Roxbury Crossing, Mass.) and Thomas. Both Julia Barnwell (East Syracuse, N.Y.) and Lima caused one turnover apiece.

The Wells women's lacrosse team next hosts Elmira College in the team's home season opener set for Wednesday, March 24 at 5 p.m.
