Women’s Lacrosse Ekes Out 11-10 Win Over SUNYIT

AURORA, N.Y. – Senior Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif.) scored six goals as the Wells College women's lacrosse team posted an 11-10 victory over the Wildcats of SUNY Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon at the South Athletic Field. With the victory, the Express improve to 6-5 overall and to 4-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-3 overall in the league and to 3-8 overall on the year.

With the score tied at six apiece, the Express went ahead for good as freshman Alaina Kelahan (New Woodstock, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead goal for the second time in the last three games. Kelahan potted her third goal of the season with only six ticks remaining in the first half, forcing home a feed from Erika Bareiss (Clinton, N.Y.) with SUNYIT's Carli Rogan off following a yellow card.

Following Kelahan's strike, the Express improved their lead to 11-9 following a Bass strike with 16:36 remaining in regulation. Both sides would be held scoreless from that point forward, until a Taviot Jackowski goal with only 1:14 remaining in regulation time made things interesting in the late stages of the contest.

A Wells turnover in the final minute led to a free position attempt by the Wildcats with 14 seconds remaining. The ensuing free position shot by Rogan was blocked by an Express defender – time expired with no further action as Wells was content with an 11-10 score.

Sophomore Savannah Tucker (Rochester, N.Y.) scored three goals in the game while also causing a team-leading three turnovers. Freshman Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal and an assist as well. For SUNYIT, Laura Tolbert racked up four goals while Amanda Bohne posted three goals and an assist alongside a team-best two caused turnovers.

Express goalkeeper Chelsea Dann (Flagstaff, Ariz.) made six saves in the victory, yielding 10 goals. Cassidy Thompson went the distance for the Wildcats, allowing 11 goals on 20 shots to draw the loss.

The Express return to action Sunday, Apr. 21 as they host the Mavericks of Medaille College in a 1:00 p.m. contest at the South Athletic Field – the two graduating senior student-athletes from Wells College, Bass and Bareiss, will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
