Women's Lacrosse Overwhelmed By Elmira, 21-11

CORNING, N.Y. – The Wells College women's lacrosse team fell to Elmira College on Saturday by a 21-11 margin on the campus of Corning Community College. With the loss, Wells drops to 0-3 on the year while Elmira earns its first victory in three games on the season.

Freshmen accounted for seven of the team's 11 goals as Mackenzie Maloney (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and Julia Smith (Guilderland, N.Y.) each netted three goals while Renee Bartosz (Blasdell, N.Y.) scored one of her own. Senior Lexie Roberson (Lewisville, N.C.) scored twice for Wells while classmates Amber Jordan (Auburn, N.Y.) and Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) scored once. Bartosz, Maloney and Roberson recorded one assist apiece to round out the point scoring.

Ultimately, Elmira captured the win after taking advantage of 13 failed clearance attempts by the Express. Additionally, the Soaring Eagles committed only 13 fouls while the Express committed 25 in the game, leading to four free-position goals by the hosts. Moorea Spoljaric single-handedly carried Elmira to the victory, recording a dominant stat line of 11 goals, 11 caused turnovers and 10 draw controls.

Maloney put the Express on top early, scoring the game's first goal with only 1:38 expired on the clock. Elmira, however, scored six-straight goals and didn't look back, eventually capturing a 10-5 lead at halftime. Maloney led off the second half for Wells with a goal only 27 seconds into the stanza, but Elmira would not let up as they used 16 shots, 11 draw controls and nine ground balls to maintain a sizeable lead.

Wells goalkeeper Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) drew the loss, allowing 21 goals on 31 shots faced – she made 10 saves in the complete game effort while Elmira's Payton Rusin turned aside five shots to earn the victory.

The Express will play its third-straight opponent from the Empire 8 Conference on Sunday, Mar. 20, hosting the Saxons from Alfred University at 3 p.m. in Aurora.
