Women's Lacrosse Rallies For 12-9 NEAC Victory

ABINGTON, Pa. – Freshman Mackenzie Maloney (Huntington Station, N.Y.) scored six goals for the Wells College women's lacrosse team in Saturday's 12-9 come-from-behind victory over Penn St.-Abington. Wells improves to 3-10 overall on the season and to 2-5 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. The Nittany Lions (2-11, 1-6 NEAC) dropped their sixth conference contest of the year.

Maloney potted six goals and added a team-leading three assists. Freshman Renee Bartosz (Blasdell, N.Y.) scored two goals and an assist while senior Amber Jordan (Auburn, N.Y.), senior Lexie Roberson (Lewisville, N.C.), junior Lexi Cohen (Newtown, Pa.) and junior Jessica Burbank (Stamford, Conn.) each added single goals.

Maloney also posted a team-best six ground balls and three draw controls while Roberson led the team with three caused turnovers.

Wells trailed by a 4-2 score with just over 10 minutes left in the first half, but mounted a furious rally that eventually produced a 5-4 lead for the Express only 1:44 into the second half. In that span, a Maloney goal preceded a strike from Cohen with only 1:01 remaining on the first half scoreboard to dramatically tie the game at halftime.

The Express overwhelmed the Nittany Lions in the second half, scoring five of the stanza's first six goals to capture a commanding 9-5 lead. Outshot in the first half by a 20-to-11 margin, Wells fired off 16 shots while limiting the Nittany Lions to 12 in the final 30 minutes. Losers of all but one draw control in the first half, the Wells comeback was fueled by winning eight draws in the second half.

Wells goalkeeper Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) made 11 saves on 20 shots, collecting her third win of the season, while Penn St.-Abington's Jill Varriano halted eight shots while yielding 12 goals in the loss.

Chasidy McLaurin scored five goals for Penn St.-Abington. Molly Wyman won five draw controls for the Nittany Lions while Bridget Meade reeled in a team-best six ground balls.

Wells will take on Bryn Athyn College this Sunday, Apr. 24 in a 2 p.m. road contest.
