Women's Lacrosse Opens NEAC Season With Win

The Wells College women's lacrosse team started its North Eastern Athletic Conference season with a 13-11 victory at Cazenovia College on Saturday, March 30. Mackenzie Maloney and Renee Bartosz scored four goals each for the Express.

The Express went on an 8-1 run over the middle portion of the contest to take control of the game.

Wells trailed 7-4 with six minutes remaining in the first half but the Express got three straight goals from Miranda Mingen, Renee Bartosz, and Mackenzie Maloney and it was tied 7-7 at halftime.

The Express started the second half with goals from Maloney and Bartosz. Cazenovia pulled within one goal at 9-8, but three goals in a row by the Express gave Wells its largest lead at 12-8. Mackenzie Maloney scored twice in that span and Savanah Connors had a man-up goal. Julia Smith added an insurance goal for Wells with 12 minutes remaining.

Maloney had four goals and two assists. Bartosz had four goals. Mingen scored twice, and Savanah Connors had two goals and one assist. Julia Smith had a goal and an assist, and Madi Walikis had one assist.

Wells goalkeeper Anna Bozeat made 12 saves and had five caused turnovers. Connors had six draw controls and Maloney had five. Wells outshot Cazenovia 33-32 and the Express were 4-for-8 on free-position shots.

Wells leveled its overall record at 2-2 and is 1-0 in the NEAC. Cazenovia is 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Express is back in action Tuesday, April 2 with a home game at 6 p.m. against Elmira College.
