Bryn Athyn Defeats Wells In Women's Lacrosse Playoff Game

The Wells College women's lacrosse team returned to postseason action for the first time since 2011 and fell at Bryn Athyn College by a 17-10 score on Tuesday, May 1 at Bryn Athyn, Pa. in a North Eastern Athletic Conference first-round matchup.

The host Lions took a two-goal lead in the first four minutes, but Wells answered with goals from Chloe Marcus and Mackenzie Maloney. Three more goals followed for Bryn Athyn, but Wells rallied back again with free-position goals from Julia Smith and Maloney. Chloe Marcus' second goal of the game pulled Wells to within 6-5 with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Bryn Athyn closed the first half with a 3-2 run. Savanah Connors scored both Wells goals in that span. The Lions led 10-7 at halftime.

Wells stayed within striking distance early in the second half. Two Lions goals were answered by goals from Madi Walikis and Maloney, and Wells trailed 12-9 with 19 minutes remaining. Bryn Athyn sealed the victory with five of the final six goals of the game.

Mackenzie Maloney finished with seven points on three goals and four assists. Those points allowed her to reach 212 career points, which is tied for the all-time record in career points at Wells, tied with Sara Cooke who scored 193 goals and 19 assists. The women's lacrosse program has competed at the varsity level since 1980. Maloney has scored 50 goals or more in all three of her varsity seasons.

Connors had two goals and one assist, and Chloe Marcus and Madi Walikis each had two goals. Julia Smith had one goal and one assist.

Anna Bozeat tied a season-high with 15 saves for Wells.

Maloney led Wells with 12 draw controls, and Julia Smith had five ground balls.

During the regular season, Bryn Athyn defeated Wells 15-3.

Bryn Athyn improved to 9-3 on the season and advanced to the NEAC semifinals this weekend at Morrisville State College. Bryn Athyn will take on Morrisville on Saturday, May 5 and Keuka College will face Medaille College.

Wells concluded the season with a 6-5 overall record. The Express went 5-4 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. The total of six wins was its most wins in a season since 2011 and it was achieved in four fewer games.
