Express Honors 2022-23 Award Winners

The athletic department was joined by top college administrators and the college President On Thursday night when Wells College held its annual Athletic Awards Ceremony in Phipps Auditorium on Wells College Campus.

Jackie Schnurr announced the team scholarship award that was earned this season by Field Hockey with a 3.683 overall GPA. Professor Schnurr also inducted some juniors and seniors into Chi Alpha Sigma. During the 2019-20 academic year, Wells College Athletics established the New York State Alpha Omicron Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma.  This National Athletic Honor Society recognizes student-athletes who have completed at least 5 full-time semesters at Wells, participate in a varsity sport and earn a cumulative gpa of 3.4 or better. The major awards of the evening were presented by athletic director Mike Lindberg and Dr Susan Henking, Vice President, Academic & Student Affairs.

Joe Horne (baseball) and Hailey Onofre (women's swimming) were awarded the Kathryn S. Maloney award for the senior student-athlete with the highest overall GPA. Horne is a Psychology major with a minor in sports management and Onofre is a biological sciences major.

Joe Horne was awarded the second-ever Wellsian Award. This award is voted on by the Coaches and Staff of the Athletic Department recognizing a student-athlete who demonstrates, leadership, scholarship, service, and a positive ambassador for Wells College.    

Ty McBride won the John D. Wilson-Ralph H. Poole Jr. Award. This is awarded annually to a member of the Senior Class who has made a distinguished contribution during their four years to the Athletic Program. 

We had two student-athletes of the year. First was Miah Williamson. Miah is a junior on the women's volleyball team from Elk Grove California and this season was named to first team all-conference in the United East. She was also named to the United East all sportsmanship team. Miah broke 4 wells records this season in women's volleyball. Most points in a match (32.5, highest attack percentage in a season (.375), most service aces in a season (75), and most points in a season (500). This season Miah lead the United East conference in hitting % while being second in points, kills, and service aces.

Max Odum was also named, Student-Athlete of the Year. Max is a junior on the baseball team from Elmira, NY. This season Max Joined the 100-hit club with only 5 other Wells College baseball players. For the season, Mas is hitting .339 with a .400 on-base percentage and .493 slugging percentage. Max is all time Wells leader in stolen bases with 49 and counting. He currently has 127 hits which ranks him second all-time for Wells College, and he is second all-time in assists with 204.
