Wells College Claims Both Men’s Volleyball NEAC Players of the Week

Justin Williams and Robert Patzer took this season's inaugural North Eastern Athletic Conference Men's Volleyball Players of the Week for their performances last weekend in the University of California's Slug Slam competition.

Williams was named the conference's defensive player of the week, while Patzer received offensive honors after leading Wells College to a 4-0 record that included a finale win over nationally-ranked and 2019 NCAA D-III national runner-up, UCSC.

Williams was named the Slug Slam Most Valuable Player after recording a team-high in digs at 34 and a team co-high in total blocks with 13. Offensively, Williams had 43 kills that ranked second for the Express.

Patzer was named to the all-tournament team after recording a team-high 51 kills. Defensively, Patzer finished second on the team in digs with 32 and co-lead the team with Williams in total blocks with 13.

Patzer helped seal the much anticipated final match between the two nationally-ranked teams after registering kills in three of the final four points that allowed Wells to maintain a two-point cushion before claiming victory. His final three kills in the fifth and deciding set against UCSC put the Express ahead with scores of 12-10, 13-11 and 14-12.

The No. 11 Wells College men's volleyball team was the only team to win all four contests in the Slug Slam with victories over Lakeland (3-0), Marymount (3-1), California-Lutheran (3-1) and host No. 8 UCSC (3-2).
