Season In Review: Wells College Women's Lacrosse

Every Friday throughout the summer of 2014, the Wells College Department of Athletics website will look back at the "year that was". Starting with field hockey on Friday, May 16, a comprehensive "season in review" for each of Wells' 14 NCAA Division III varsity sports will be posted, giving fans not only a look back but also a look forward to the upcoming season of play.

The women's lacrosse team at Wells played a very competitive schedule in 2014 that included Freedom Conference runner-up Wilkes and other non-conference foes such as Alfred and Hilbert. Head Coach Kylie Hrehor, in her second season with the program, piloted the Express to three conference victories in which her team scored a combined 41 goals in league wins.

NOTABLES

THIRD TEAM: Freshman Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.) earned Third Team All-Conference honors from the North Eastern Athletic Conference following the season. In doing so, she became the first Wells freshman since Courtney Grosser '14 in 2011 to earn All-Conference recognition. Appearing in all 13 games for the Express, she ranked third in point scoring after tallying 17 goals and six assists for 23 total points (17-6=23). Additionally, Stokes hauled in 38 ground balls and reeled in 33 draw controls, ranking second on the team in both categories.

THE COMEBACK KIDS: Trailing 12-1 with 20:08 left in regulation, the Express almost pulled off a comeback for the ages against Cazenovia on Apr. 6 by scoring eight goals in 18:17. However, the Express ultimately fell to their league rivals by a 12-9 score. The Wildcats went onto play in the NEAC semifinals, ultimately losing to the eventual champions from Keuka College.

EXTRA LACROSSE: Wells overcame a four goal deficit on Apr. 18 against Penn St.-Abington, forcing an overtime period that the Express went on to lose 15-14. With only 2:32 left in regulation time, Wells scored four goals to tie the game at 12 aside. With only 17 ticks left on the scoreboard, sophomore Lexie Roberson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) converted a free position attempt for her first goal of the game to send both teams to overtime.

HOME COOKING: The Express posted back-to-back wins at home on Apr. 11 and Apr. 12, defeating Lancaster Bible by a 14-4 score before setting down Wilson by a 19-8 margin. Against the Chargers on the 11th, Stokes caused seven turnovers to rank second amongst all Wells players in single-game history dating back to 2009. Versus Wilson the very next day, junior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) scored a career-high six goals to power the Express to victory.

APPROACHING MILESTONES: Entering her senior season in 2014, Fargnoli ranks 14th all-time in career point scoring with 71 points via 58 goals and 13 assists. In modern-day NCAA Division III program history (1986-present), Fargnoli ranks 11th and would need only one point to crack the top-10 list.
