Burghardt, Sekine To Join Wells College Department of Athletics
AURORA, N.Y.
– Wells College Director of Athletics
Michael Borsz announced the hiring of Kylie
Burghardt and Daisuke
Sekine Monday afternoon. Burghardt will pilot the
school’s Field Hockey and Women’s Lacrosse teams while
Sekine joins the Express as the Head Athletic Trainer.
Burghardt comes to Aurora after serving as the assistant field
hockey coach at Ithaca College for the 2012-13 season. With the
Bombers, Burghardt was directly responsible for the team’s
defense and goaltending while also setting up overnight visits,
recruiting, practice planning and game strategy under long time
Head Coach Tracey Houk. As a squad, the Bombers
ranked third in the Empire 8 Conference in defensive saves and
fourth overall in goaltender saves under Burghardt’s
supervision.
Before joining the Bombers, Burghardt served as the Head Coach of
the field hockey program at Trine University in Angola, Ind. She
was responsible for managing the team’s budget, all
recruiting responsibilities, the scheduling of varsity contests and
all of the program’s fundraising duties. At Trine, she also
served as the assistant coach for the women’s lacrosse
program under Head Coach Scott Morrison and worked
primarily with the team’s defenseman.
After attending Cornell University as a freshman in college,
Burghardt moved on to SUNY Cortland and played three years of field
hockey for the Red Dragons. A 2010 graduate of SUNY Cortland with a
degree in Physical Education, Burghardt earned All-Conference and
All-Region recognition as a defenseman for the Red Dragons as her
teams went a combined 53-8 across her three seasons.
Sekine comes to Wells College following a stint at the Professional
Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy in Mamaroneck, N.Y. There,
he implemented treatment of injuries and created rehabilitation
programs for patients in the physical therapy clinic. He also has
experience at both the high school and collegiate levels as an
athletic trainer, including stops at Mamaroneck High School and
Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md.
While serving as a graduate assistant at Salisbury, he provided
medical coverage for the men’s and women’s cross
country and tennis teams in addition to women’s volleyball
and baseball. He also completed internships at Kearney High School
in Kearney, Neb. as well as the Great Plains Regional Medical
Center in North Platte, Neb. Sekine has participated in several
NCAA tournaments as an athletic trainer, including two Division II
women’s basketball championship tournaments and the 2011 NCAA
Division III Baseball College World Series.
Sekine possesses certifications from the National Athletic
Trainers’ Association Board of Certification, the National
Athletic Trainers Association and the National Strengthening and
Conditioning Association. A 2009 graduate of the University of
Nebraska at Kearney with a bachelor of science in Exercise Science
and Athletic Training, he completed his master’s degree at
Salisbury in Applied Health Physiology in 2010.
Both Burghardt and Sekine are expected to start at Wells College
following the New Year.
