'On This Day' Nettles Sets Single Match Kills Record at Red Dragon Invitational

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Sept. 5, five years ago in 2015.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Vashti Nettles was voted to the All-Tournament Red Dragon Invitational Team despite the Express dropping a pair of contests on Sept. 5, 2015, that included a five-set thriller to Hartwick College. The four-day tournament left Wells with a 2-2 overall record in the tournament.

Nettles pounded 62 kills and chipped in with eight service aces, 14 digs and 10 total blocks during tournament play. Additionally, against Hartwick, Nettles posted 24 kills to set the single match program record to break teammate Meredith Kadjeski's record of 23 kills, that she achieved twice.

On Sept. 5th, Fredonia St. was able to defeat Wells in four sets via scores of 25-19, 25-15, 19-25 and 25-16. The Express captured the third set after hitting an impressive .363, using 14 kills on 33 swings with only two attacking errors committed, but 11 attacking errors in the first two sets placed Wells in a hole early.

Nettles posted a team-best 13 kills for the Express, adding a team-best three service aces. Olyvia Brazier had another solid all-around game for Wells, chipping in with 23 digs (the most-ever by a single player in a four-set match) and 12 kills to hit .184 on the afternoon after committing only five attacking errors in 38 total attempts. Eliza Schwab assisted 37 of her team's 40 kills while libero Nadine Pershyn led the team with 13 digs.

Hartwick defeated Wells in the five-set thriller, posting set scores of 17-25, 27-25, 25-23, 12-25 and 15-12. Nettles recorded the team-record 24 single match kills to lead Wells while Schwab chipped in with 45 assists. Defensively, Brazier added 20 digs and Nicole Loeven posted 17 digs of her own. Nettles continued her strong stretch of serving, tying with Brazier with five service aces.
