'On This Day'- Taguchi Takes Last Match to Give Wells 5-4 Victory Over Fredonia

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Sept. 12, nine years ago in 2011.

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's tennis team opened their 2011 fall season in thrilling fashion, holding on to defeat Fredonia State, 5-4, for their first victory of the season. The Express took two of three in doubles action and squeaked out three of six singles matches to earn the victory.

No. 2 doubles team Caitlyn Copfer and Brittany Vanno earned a hard fought 8-6 victory and teammate Chika Taguchi and Kelly Pietruch cruised to an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles to give Wells the 2-1 edge.

Sarah Hansen fell in a tie break at No. 1 singles, but Kate Ellis worked to a quick 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles as did Kelly Pietruch at No. 6 singles (6-3, 6-0) to give Wells the 4-2 edge. Fredonia took No. 3 singles 6-0, 7-5 and Brittany Vanno fell in a hard match (3-6, 6-0, 10-12) at No. 5 singles as Fredonia even the matched at 4-4.

Chika Taguchi would play well into the twilight, pulling out a thrilling 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles to clinch the victory for Wells.
