'On This Day' Women’s Volleyball Team Records First Modern-Day Consecutive Sweeps

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Sept. 13, six years ago in 2014.

OSWEGO, N.Y. – For the first time in program history, the Wells College women's volleyball team posted back-to-back 3-0 victories in a doubleheader after defeating Alfred University and Bard College to conclude the Oswego State Volleyball Invitational on Saturday. Exiting play with five victories on the season, Wells has tied the modern-day record for single-season wins that they set last season.

Wells defeated Alfred in straight sets (25-22, 25-11, 25-11) before dispatching Bard by similar margins (25-11, 25-10, 25-13). Against Bard in the tournament finale, Wells hit a combined .354 off of 30 kills with only seven errors in 65 total attacks to set an all-time program record in that statistic. Versus Alfred, Wells tied the team record for kills in a three-set match with 32.

Setter Taryn Heath assisted 25 of her team's 32 kills, setting a record for helpers in a three-set match. Only a day removed from tallying the program's best-ever single match hitting percentage, Vashti Nettles posted a team-leading eight kills alongside only one error in 13 total attacks for a .538 hitting percentage. Defensively, Olyvia Brazier chipped in with 14 digs.

In the finale against Bard, Meredith Kadjeski converted eight kills on 12 attacks for a .583 hitting percentage while Eliza Schwab set up 11 of her team's 30 kills. Defensively, Schwab also led with eight digs. Zakarra Butts hammered home eight service aces in the match, falling only two short of her program record set against Johnson State on Aug. 31, 2013.

For her performance in the two-day invitational, Nettles picked up All-Tournament honors following a poll of the participating coaches.
