Baseball & Men’s Lacrosse: "On This Day" 4-4-17

"On This Day" is a Wells College Athletics feature designed to look back over the past three seasons when most of our 2020 seniors began play for the Express and what highlights happened to Wells' spring teams on this day on April 4

Baseball & Men's Lacrosse: April 4, 2017

Wells College baseball freshman pitcher Zach Kemp and Wells College men's lacrosse senior attackman Alex Milliken were selected as the North Eastern Athletic Conference players of the week in their respective sports for the week ending April 2, 2017.

Kemp was named NEAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week, while Milliken took NEAC Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week.

In baseball, Kemp turned in his best pitching performance of the year and pitched the Express to a win over Utica College in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday with six strong innings and allowed just two runs on two hits. He had seven strikeouts and walked four. It was his first collegiate victory, and it helped Wells to its fourth win of the year in the program's inaugural season.

It is the second week in a row that Wells baseball players earned conference honors. Brandon Shirley (Player of the Week) and Jared Strait (Pitcher of the Week) were honored for the week ending March 26.

In men's lacrosse, it's the second time this season that Milliken has earned the offensive player award, and it marks the third time this year that a Wells men's lacrosse player has earned conference recognition.

Milliken led Wells to an 18-8 victory over SUNY Cobleskill in the NEAC season-opener for both teams on Saturday, April 1. In that game, Milliken scored eight goals and had two assists – both season highs. Earlier in the week, Milliken scored three goals and had two assists in a non-conference 14-13 loss against SUNY Canton.
