President Gibralter Addresses Country’s Plight

As Wells College President Jonathan Gibralter stated in his letter to the student body, "Now, more than ever, is the time when Wells must lead by example. We will show the nation, and the world, what can happen when a college community wholeheartedly commits to racial justice…Be steadfast in your commitment for change. Remember that people from marginalized groups don't get 'days off' — and neither should our community in the fight for justice."

The tragic and senseless death of George Floyd has opened a wound in the United States that has never healed. A wound that morphs but never mends. A wound that will continue to blight our community until we are all pleading, "I can't breathe."

None of us will breather until the root of social injustice, systemic racism, and the disrespect for human life is confronted directly and comprehensively. Though we may not have the solution, we offer our students a commitment to listen with empathy and respect so that we may all breathe freely, equitably, and safely.

As Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world." We will be part of the change.

Wells College Strong. Wells College United.
