“Where Are They Now” – Sydney Line

"Where Are They Now" is a Wells College Athletics series that spotlights graduates with an inside look at some of the many special student-athletes from years past. We would love to tell your story; knowing that part of you journey began with us! Today's segment features Sydney Line.

Sydney Line was a member of the Wells College field hockey and lacrosse teams (2013-17) and graduated from Wells with majors in biochemistry and molecular biology in 2017. On the field she anchored the defense in field hockey, a position that traditionally does not receive many accolades. Sydney's efforts did not go unnoticed, especially during the 2016-17 season. Sydney earned defensive player of the week from the North Eastern Athletic Conference during the field hockey season and also earned the team's Express Award in women's lacrosse. Her passion for lacrosse remains with her today as a coach and teacher in South Carolina.

In a brief question and answer segment with Sydney, we asked her to reflect on her time at Wells in looking back, while at the same time offering some advice to current and future Wells College student-athletes:

Wells College teams participated on and years of participation: Field Hockey and Women's Lacrosse 2013-2017

Current occupation: I'm a seventh-grade science teacher and lacrosse coach in Greenville, S.C.

Reasons for choosing Wells to continue your athletic career: I chose to play field hockey for Wells because the girls were so welcoming and I wasn't just a number. I was able to focus on my academics while playing sports; which was important to me. I loved the campus and how much of a community Wells is. I actually decided to play lacrosse at Wells because some of the girls on the field hockey team also played lacrosse! What is nice about Wells is that you can try new things and there are people who will support you.

Favorite memory of Wells College: It's hard to choose one memory because I had so many amazing memories at Wells. I don't think I would have loved Wells as much as I did without playing field hockey and lacrosse. So many of my best friends were on the team and now they are my family. We all participated in traditions, which made our college experience so unique compared to others, and for that I am forever thankful. Not a day goes by when I don't miss or think about Wells, especially those beautiful sunsets at the dock.

Advice you would give to current Wells College Student-Athletes: First of all, don't forget that you are a student first, athlete second. Don't be afraid to ask your coach or professors for help. Second, try to support other sports teams and other communities around campus! Not only does that show you are a supporter of the Wells community, but you get to connect with other students and create a strong network. And lastly, enjoy the little things at Wells – watching the sunset at the dock, participating in traditions, and living right next door to your best friends. Four years go by fast, so enjoy what Wells has to offer and you will get a family for life.
