Softball: "On This Day" 4-22-18
"On This Day" is a Wells College Athletics feature designed to look back over the past three seasons when most of our 2020 seniors began play for the Express and what highlights happened to Wells' spring teams on this day on April 22
Softball: April 22, 2018
The Wells College softball team picked up two more victories on Sunday, April 22 with a doubleheader sweep of Lancaster Bible College at the Wells Turf Field. Wells took the first game 8-7 and won the second game 11-2 in five innings. Naomi Kubo homered three times over the two games to help extend Wells' winning streak to four games.
Wells 8, Lancaster Bible 7
Wells fell behind early before coming back to win a close game in the opener. Lancaster Bible scored four in the top of the first and Wells got one back in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff home run by Kubo.
The Express took a 6-5 lead with five runs in the second inning. Dallia Rorick and Lizzie Monnat had RBI singles in the inning, and Clara DiMino had a two-run single to center field to put Wells in front.
LBC tied the score with a run in the top of the fifth, and Wells went back ahead on an RBI groundout by Autumn Nolan in the bottom of the fifth. The Chargers scored again to tie it 7-7 in the top of the sixth, but Monnat delivered the go-ahead hit with a single to score Rorick in the bottom of the sixth.
Kubo retired the Chargers in order in the seventh to close out the victory. She was the winning pitcher in six innings of work with nine strikeouts and six hits and three runs allowed. Monnat finished with two hits and two RBIs. Rorick and Kubo each scored two runs.
Wells 11, Lancaster Bible 2 (5 innings)
Wells scored twice in the first inning and added one in the second on a solo homer by Kubo.
The Express broke out with six runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth, including doubles by Jenna Devora, Autumn Nolan, and Jessica Conover.
Wells took a 9-2 lead to the bottom of the fifth to end the contest after Gabby Sawyer scored when Kubo hit her second home run of the game to provide the decisive margin.
Conover was the winning pitcher with five solid innings. She allowed two runs and seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Kubo was 3-for-3 with two home runs and four runs scored. Devora and Sawyer each scored twice with the latter going 2-for-3.
