"Awards Show Countdown": Women's Soccer

"Awards Show Countdown" is a Wells College Athletics feature that reviews a memorable moment from each team while counting down to showtime. With 12 days remaining until the virtual online Express Awards Show, let's take a look at a moment from the women's soccer team's 2019 season.

Some of the best moments of Express teams come in the heat of battle. Whether the end result was favorable or unfavorable, the scoreboard never reveals those traits and characteristics that Wells players will take with them beyond their time on the playing filed.

Character, resiliency, camaraderie and giving the best effort possible to the final horn are just some of the representative terms and descriptions that were a trademark of the women's soccer team. And they were never better on display than in a one-goal game on the road against SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday, Oct. 5.

What made this game memorable was not only the display of the team's resolve, but how it carried over to some of the most competitive contests of the season as the first of a string of games that were decided by two kicks or less.

In the team's second road conference game of the season at Cobleskill, Mackenzie Powers converted a breakaway that allowed the women's soccer team to enter the break with the lead. Both teams battled in the second half until a volley from a corner kick gave the home team the final score of the contest and the go-ahead goal. The Express continued to battle until the final horn with solid performances both offensively and defensively.

Jennifer McCumber had nine saves in the Wells net, while the Express got key shots from Powers, Alexis Huff and Erin Persons in a rally attempt that set the the team's standard moving forward for the rest of the season.
