“Where Are They Now” – Amy Durant Solomon

The "Where Are They Now" Wells College Athletics series puts a spotlight on the alumni and alumnae to give the Wells community an inside look at some of its many special student-athletes from years past. We would love to tell your story knowing that part of you journey began with us! Today's segment features Amy Durant Solomon.

Amy Durant Solomon helped pioneer the field hockey team as an original member back in the mid-1970s. She was an integral part of the team's formation playing under Wells College coaching legend Kathryn Maloney. Amy was a driving force between a pair of back-to-back seasons of seven wins each. When the team captured seven wins in 1977, she was the team's most valuable in her junior year at Wells. She finished her field hockey career the following season with another seven-win season as the team's captain. Amy also played on the odd basketball team and graduated from Wells in 1979 as an English major. She went on from Wells to a storied career in education before her retirement.

In a brief question and answer segment with Amy, we asked her to reflect on her time at Wells in looking back, while at the same time offering some advice to current and future Wells College student-athletes:

Wells College teams participated on and years of participation: Field Hockey (1975 – 1978); Odd Basketball Team (1975 – 1976).

Athletic and/or academic awards: Field Hockey MVP (1977).

Current occupation: Retired Nursery School Teacher; 20 years at St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School

Professional and/or community clubs/associations: The City Choir of Washington.

Reasons for choosing Wells to continue your athletic career: I did not choose Wells because of the existing athletic program. But Wells athletics became important once I was on campus! I was attracted to Wells because of single sex education, the beautiful location on Lake Cayuga and the warm welcome when I came up for my tour and visit. Upon arrival, there were so many of us who had played field hockey in high school, that a team was created! The close friendships forged over my four years are very, very special and I remain in contact with many of my teammates.

Favorite memory of Wells College: First, hearing the bells ring for mealtime!!!  Second, sitting in the halls of the dorms with our doors open, music playing and laughter in the air. Third, practices and games on the athletic field overlooking Lake Cayuga. A beautiful sight in all weathers.

Advice you would give to current Wells College Student-Athletes: Cherish every moment! This is your time! Try new things, move out of your comfort zone. Now is the time to explore and stretch your imagination. The options are limitless and the horizon beckons!
