'On This Day' Express Swimming Teams Claim Duo Meet against SUNY Opponent
'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Jan. 23, two years ago in 2019.
The Wells College men's and women's swimming teams both prevailed over SUNY Delhi in a dual-meet Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019 at SUNY Delhi.
The Wells women's team won by a score of 437-152, while the Wells men's team captured a 277-261 victory. For the women's team, four Wells swimmers were double-winners in individual event performances. For the men's team, four different swimmers combined to win seven individual events in the meet.
In women's swimming team action, Courtney Cloutier took victories in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 12:03.74 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:10.22. Callia Ortega won a pair of sprint freestyle events with a time of 1:01.81 in the 100 free and 2:21.03 in the 200 free. Shannon Simmons won the 50-yard freestyle in 30.39 seconds and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:18.29, while Bella George was first in the 200-yard individual medley in 3:16.02 and first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:33.92.
Wells closed the meet with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:05.03 by Cloutier, Jess Boeheim, Simmons, and Ortega.
In men's swimming team action, Wells started with an unopposed victory in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:08.25 by Brandon Sprague, Aaron Connolly, Richie Ford, and Bennett Ervin.
Connolly went on to win first-place in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:39.53 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.51. Sprague swept the distance freestyle events with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 13:43.41 and the 500 free in 6:52.39. Ervin returned to the lineup and claimed victories in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:04.27 and the 200 free in 2:23.32. Ford was first in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:17.72 and was second in the 200 IM in 2:48.40.
