'On This Day' Roberts Paces Men’s Soccer Team to Shutout Win Over Nittany Lions

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Sept. 11, 10 years ago in 2010.

The Wells College men's soccer team out-worked, out-hustled and out-played the visiting Penn. St. Berks Nittany Lions en route to a 4-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory Saturday afternoon, Sept. 11, 2010, in Aurora.

Delroy Roberts finished with two goals, while Justin Rigney and Patrick O'Callaghan chipped in with one goal each. CJ Bayly and Aaron Brody combined for the five-save shutout in goal for the Express.

The Express came out aggressive in the first half winning every 50-50 ball and beating the Nittany Lions to each loose ball as they jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. The Express first goal came on a pass from Patrick Sodums inside the box to Roberts, who delivered a rocket to the back of the goal for a 1-0 lead at 16:59. Less than four minutes later Roberts again found the back of the net on an unassisted goal as the Express' momentum continued to build.

Wells scored their third goal on what looked to be a non-offensive opportunity. Nittany Lion goal keeper Jonathan Martin had the ball settled and in front of him surveying the field for a pass, but Rigney came rushing in all alone to pressure the attempt and deflected the ball just enough for him to cradle and tuck a shot past Miller for a 3-0 lead heading into the break.

O'Callaghan put the finishing touches on an impressive day for the Express as he would loft a shot over the drawn out goalkeeper who had come out to challenge a ball, scoring his first collegiate goal and handing the Express a 4-0 lead with 23 minutes to play. The Wells defense took over from there, frustrating the Nittany Lions who managed just three shots on goal in the half, as the Express cruised to their third shutout victory of the season.
