'On This Day' Men's Soccer Plays to Double-OT Deadlock

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Aug. 29, six years ago in 2014.

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Despite outshooting their opponent by a 26-to-4 margin, the Wells College men's soccer team played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw on Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, against the Spartans of D'Youville College. Following the non-conference contest played on the campus of Keuka College, both team's overall records stand at 0-0-1.

In the first half alone, Wells outshot their opponent by a 12-to-1 margin and placed six shots on net but all were turned aside by D'Youville keeper Brett Matthews. The offense continued to apply pressure to the Spartans backstop, firing nine shots in the second half before rattling off five in both overtimes.

Carlos Valdivieso led all Wells players with five shots to his credit. William Schanbacher ranked second with four total shots, including one that rang off the crossbar in the first half. Wyatt Buerkle and Alexander Essandoh each had three shots and between those four players, accounted for more than 50 percent of all Express shots.

Wells was awarded seven corner kicks as opposed to only two for the Spartans.

Wells goalkeeper Michael Sciotti turned aside the lone shot on goal that he faced from D'Youville. Matthews was a force for D'Youville, halting all 15 shots on net that he saw to secure the tie for his team.
