'On This Day' Diaby Seals Win in Late Stages of First Half for Men’s Soccer Team

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Sept. 29, seven years ago in 2013.

AURORA, N.Y. – Seven different players recorded a point as the Wells College men's soccer team posted a 5-0 shutout victory over the Pioneers of Alfred State College Sunday afternoon, Sept. 29, 2013, at the South Athletic Field.

Holding on to a 1-0 lead in the first half, Lanfia Diaby scored once and assisted on another in the final minutes of the first half to give the Express a 3-0 lead into the break. Diaby's team-leading three-point effort came after assisting on Max Cherry's goal with eight seconds left in the half. Diaby's goal was assisted by senior Pat O'Callaghan and was the first of his career.

Following a corner kick by Trevor Fahey, Alexander Essandoh scored his fourth goal of the season at 11:11 to place Wells up by a 1-0 margin.

Following an own goal by Alfred State in the middle of the second half, J. Tyler Adams chipped a ball over the visiting goalkeeper's head off of a long pass from Adam Sullivan to conclude the day's scoring.

Michael Sciotti picked up his second victory of the season in goal for Wells, turning aside all three shots on net that he faced. Nick Smith halted 10-of-15 shots on goal for Alfred State, allowing five goals to the Express.
