'On This Day' Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Earn First NEAC Win of 13-14 Season

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Nov. 25, seven years ago in 2013.

Men's Basketball

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – Powered by a triumvirate of 10-plus point scorers, the Wells College men's basketball team picked up a 74-69 victory over the Wildcats of Cazenovia College Monday evening, Nov. 25, 2013, at the Schneeweiss Athletic Complex, while also earning their first North Eastern Athletic Conference victory of the year.

With a team-leading 18 points, Al Paul was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe alongside a 5-of-8 mark from the floor. Shakeel Simmons collected 14 total points for Wells, shooting 2-for-3 from 3-point range while also securing nine rebounds.

Jordan Jean was able to earn his first collegiate double-double, pulling down a team-best 15 rebounds alongside 11 points. Tyrese Campbell was a team-leading 3-for-9 from beyond the arc.

With the win, the Express pick up their 80th victory in team history and their 10th-straight over the Wildcats. Head Coach Joe Wojtylko also earns his 90th collegiate coaching victory, having previously earned 10 wins with the Statesmen of Hobart College during the 2005-06 season as interim bench boss.

Women's Basketball

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – Powered by a 19-point performance by Ashley Roser, the Wells College women's basketball team posted a 75-71 victory over the Wildcats of Cazenovia College Monday evening, Nov. 25, 2013,  at the Schneeweiss Athletic Complex, while securing their first North Eastern Athletic Conference victory of the season.

Roser collected her 19th-straight double-double dating back to last season, securing a season-high 21 rebounds alongside a team-leading 19 points. Theresa Hernandez picked up a double-double in her second-straight game, scoring 13 points and adding 10 rebounds for Wells. Cassie Smythe poured home a team-leading three field goals beyond the arc.

The Express jumped out to an 18-4 first half lead through the game's first 14 minutes. Olivia Baum bombed a 3-point basket only 4:09 into the first half to place Wells up by a 14-3 margin. Jumpers by Taylor Spranger and Hernandez followed a Kimberly Vrigian free-throw shot to create the visitors' 14 point lead.  Smythe hit a clutch three-point basket with only 17 seconds remaining on the first half clock, placing Wells up by 10 points, 38-28, entering halftime.

Cazenovia mounted a valiant comeback in the second half, outscoring Wells by a 43-37 margin in the game's final 20 minutes, but a pair of Hernandez free throws placed the Express ahead at 71-69 before finishing with a four-point win.
