'On This Day' Strong Second Half Propels Women’s Soccer Team to Season-Opening Win Over Mustangs

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Aug. 30, 12 years ago in 2008.

Aurora, New York – Rachel Mattraw had a goal and an assist, and Amanda Heterbring added a goal of her own as the Wells College women's soccer team (1-0-0) rolled over Morrisville State College (0-1-0) 3-1 on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Wells. Elizabeth Fish scored the lone goal for Morrisville.

Morrisville got the scoring started early when Fish scored on a cross from Caitlyn Campbell 16-minutes into the game. That would end up being the only goal for Morrisville as the Wells defense held down Morrisville allowing just two shots on goal.

Juli Vibbard scored to tie the game with a touch-pass assist from Mattraw to end the first half's scoring. Wells never looked back as Mattraw netted the game-winner about four minutes into the second half before Heterbring added an unassisted insurance goal in the 61st minute on an incredible shot from 20-yards out, to finish off the game's scoring.

Adriana Perry earned an assist on the game-winning goal as one of three freshmen to combine on the first two goals for the Express. Claire Petersen registered the win in net for Wells, who held an 8-1 edge in corners.

"It's always good to get the first win out of the way, but we still have a lot to improve on," said head coach and Wells athletic director Jamey Ventura.
