'On This Day' Men’s Soccer Team Wins Third-Straight in Dramatic Fashion

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Sept. 27, four years ago in 2016.

The Wells College men's soccer team extended its win streak to three games after rallying late in the contest for another fantastic finish. This time, the Express scored a late game-winning goal over Utica College for a 2-1 final on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, at the Wells Turf Field.

The winning goal was scored by Benjamen Schanbacher on a direct kick with 3:55 remaining in the second half. The free kick was set up by a weaving run through the midfield by Jesse Constantino, who picked up the ball in the defensive third for Wells, carried it past three Utica midfielders, and was taken down by a hard foul about 28 yards from the net. The Utica player was carded, and the direct kick was awarded to Wells. Schanbacher drove a low, curling strike past the Utica goalkeeper.

Utica opened the scoring in the ninth minute on a curling shot from Marcel Dupuis that wrapped inside the left post from about 30 yards away.

The Express tied the game in the 52nd minute as Carlos Valdivieso carried the ball into the box, and his shot beat the Utica goalkeeper. It was the first goal of the season for Valdivieso.

Utica held a slim 19-16 advantage in shots. Wells goalkeeper Owen May had six saves.
