'On This Day' Women's Soccer Team Ties Scoring Record
'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Sept. 20, six years ago in 2014.
AURORA, N.Y. – Seven different players recorded a goal for the Wells College women's soccer team en route to a record-tying 10-0 victory over the College of Saint Elizabeth on Saturday at the North Athletic Field. With the victory, Wells improves to 3-1 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
With 10 goals, Wells equaled their program's NCAA Division III-era record set on Oct. 25, 2009, a 10-0 neutral site victory against Wilson College. The Express have previously scored more than 10 goals four other times, including back-to-back 13-0 victories against Hamilton and Houghton during the 1980 season, but Wells had not joined the NCAA until the 1986 season.
Heather Hiltbrand scored the game's first goal at 1:06, forcing home a pass from Shannon Blanford. Hiltbrand later added a goal at 6:17, firing home a long-range blast from the left side to increase the score. Madison Maloney scored back-to-back goals for Wells, including a penalty kick conversion, to create a 4-0 lead. Karley Raczynski scored Wells' fifth goal after her blast from the right side caromed off of a Saint Elizabeth defender in the 12th minute, placing the Express up 5-0.
After the half, Wells exploded for an additional five goals, sparked by the first two collegiate strikes from Bria Hernandez that were scored back-to-back to open the stanza. Arianna Harmon, Dayna Vibbard and Lindsey Hall each scored for Wells to conclude the game's scoring. Hall's marker was the first of her young career.
Wells blasted 42 shots in the contest, limiting Saint Elizabeth to zero shots offensively. Wells backstops Quinn Doubet and Abbigail Kime each played 45 minutes and neither were forced to make a save.
