'On This Day' Top-20 Finish for Express Duo Lead Wells to 4th in Cortland

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Oct. 19, seven years ago in 2013.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The women's cross country team from Wells College competed at the Jack Daniels Cross Country Invitational Saturday afternoon, Oct. 19, 2013, in Cortland with a fourth-place team finish across the 4K course.

The event, hosted by SUNY Cortland, is named in recognition of Dr. Jack Daniels, the current head coach at Wells College. Daniels served as the long-time head coach of men's and women's track and field/cross country at Cortland and racked up seven NCAA Division III national championships in women's cross country.

For the 20th-straight race, Emily Middlebrook led all Express runners and placed ninth amongst the highly-competitive field. Middlebrook eclipsed her 2012 time at the Jack Daniels Invitational by two seconds, finishing in 15:46.4 and running at a 6:21 pace for Wells.

For the fourth-straight race, Deaven Theriault finished second amongst Express runners and placed 17th amongst all runners with a time of 15:58.6, a pace of 6:26. Katie Lamanna was 47th amongst the field, completing the course in 17:51.2.

Anastasia Benson checked in with a time of 18:32.9, placing 56th out of 84 runners in the race. Jenn VanWormer and Bailey Brown clocked in at 18:47.6 and 19:51.9, respectively, while Veronica Frisenda and Paige Fralick rounded out the field at 20:40.9 and 25:32.9.
