'On This Day' Shumski Debuts with Fourth Overall in Leading Wells to Third in Men’s Cross Country

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Sept. 5, 11 years ago in 2009.

Utica, NY – The Wells College men's cross country team hit the ground running Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, finishing with an impressive third-place finish out of eight teams.

Hobart took first with 51 points, SUNY IT was second with 85 and Wells totaled 107 points for the day.  The men were 23 points ahead of fourth-place SUNY Canton.

The men were led by freshman Brayden Shumski with an overall fourth-place finish in a field of sixty-plus. In his first collegiate race, Shumski crossed the line with a time of 21:44.5 over the 6k course. 

Brandon Johnston placed an impressive ninth place with a time of 22:45.5.  Sam Share finished at 19th (23:42.7).  Van Buscko (26:18.6) and Brian Corcoran (26:20.1) were the Express' third and fourth scorers for Wells placing 42nd and 43rd overall, while Evando Nascimento was close behind in 47th with a time of 26:55 to round out the scoring for the Express.
