'On This Day' Hiltbrand’s Double OT Game Winner Saddles Mustangs

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Oct. 20, eight years ago in 2012.

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Midfielder Heather Hiltbrand hammered home a direct kick in the second overtime period to lift the Wells College women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over the Mustangs of Morrisville State College Saturday evening, Oct. 20, 2012. With the victory, the Express have collected three straight victories.

Hiltbrand scored her first collegiate goal at 114:01 of the second overtime period, carrying the Express to the victory. Following a foul called against the Mustangs, Hiltbrand blasted a direct kick on net that evaded the grasp of Morrisville State goaltender Jennifer Zidzik for the game-winning strike. The Express have now won four of their last five games.

Morrisville State struck first in the contest as Nicole Achtyl fed Lindsay Peri with a pass that beat the Express defense back. On a breakaway, Peri was able to place the ball behind Wells goaltender Ashley Roser for the game's first goal.

The Express scored the game's next two goals to take a 2-1 lead exiting the first half of play. Paige Stone, corralling a Shannon Blanford feed, was able to chip the ball over Zidzik's head in the game's 11th minute to knot the score at one apiece. Midfielder Chelsey Martinelli scored her third goal of the season in the 37th minute, depositing the ball past the Mustangs goaltender to extend the lead. Roser collected her first collegiate assist on Martinelli's strike.

Krista Baxter's goal with just under 15 minutes remaining in regulation knotted the game at two and forced extra time. Baxter carried the ball up the field and was able to move around an Express defender. She then was able to beat Roser by aiming for the corner for the game tying strike.

Roser collects her sixth victory of the season, turning aside 6-of-8 shots on goal, while Zidzik drew the loss by allowing three goals on 10 shots on net.
